HMAS Melbourne R-21103 viewsMelbourne's damaged bow as a result of the collision with HMAS Voyager. Voyager weighing 3,658 tonnes was taking part in night flying exercises when it crossed the bow of the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, weighing 20,322 tonnes, at 8:56pm on the 10th of February 1964. Traveling at approximately 22 knots, the Melbourne cut Voyager in half near the bridge. Voyager sank with the loss of 82 lives.

During night flying exercises on 3 June 1969, the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans, also crossed in front of the Melbourne and was cut in half in the ensuing collision. Her bow section quickly sank, taking 74 of her crew down with it.

Myself and several of Hobart's crew spent a couple of hours on the American patrol boat off the coast of South Vietnam. We took Hobart's Doctor with us as insurance.Bevin Stringer
